Brady Singer lasted just 2.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs as the Miami Marlins snapped the Cincinnati Reds' five-game winning streak with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday night at loanDepot park. The loss dropped the Reds to 8-4.
Singer Struggles
Singer recorded just eight outs in his shortest start of the season. The right-hander was hit hard from the start, surrendering two runs in the first inning and two more in the second before Griffin Conine's two-run homer in the third chased him from the game. Singer was also charged with two errors on failed pickoff attempts, compounding the damage. He fell to 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA.
Conine, Norby Power Marlins
Griffin Conine provided the biggest blow with a 403-foot, two-run homer off Singer in the third inning, giving Miami a 6-2 lead. Connor Norby added a solo shot in the seventh off Connor Phillips to extend the lead to 7-4. Xavier Edwards continued his hot start, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and pushing his average to .400. Liam Hicks and Jakob Marsee each added two hits.
Stewart Stays Hot
Sal Stewart continued his strong season with a two-run homer in the fifth off Eury Pérez, cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Miami native went 2-for-4 with two RBI in front of family and friends, raising his average to .366. Eugenio Suárez added an RBI double in the first inning, and T.J. Friedl collected three hits but was stranded each time.
Bullpen Limits Damage
Sam Moll was excellent in relief, working 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to keep the Reds within striking distance. Pierce Johnson and Connor Phillips combined for three more innings of one-run ball, but the offense couldn't rally against the Marlins' bullpen, which threw four scoreless innings after Pérez departed.
The Reds and Marlins close the four-game series Thursday with a 12:10 p.m. ET first pitch.
